AMLSN 51ST AGM CUM ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE AND WORKSHOP WELL ATTENDED

The 2015 AMLSN AGM cum Scientific Conference and Workshop which held between 12th and 17th October, 2015 in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State has gone down history as one of the most attended AMLSN AGMs in recent times.
The AGM/Scientific Conference which held at The Artrium venue, Plot 28 Stadium Road Port Harcourt was attended by over 1300 Medical Laboratory Scientists from all over Nigeria and beyond; that is in addition to scores of friends and lovers of the profession who identified with us at the event.

Following the arrival of guests and attendees from all over the country, the conference started off in earnest Monday night with a cocktail party presided over by the AMLSN national president: Alhaji Toyosi Raheem who arrived with his executive team (after the traditional visits to some select leaders in Rivers State) for the event beaming with smiles and colourfully dressed.
One remarkable event at the cocktail party was the inauguration of AMLSN board of trustees made up of respectable elders in the profession who have done very well for themselves and for the profession.
On Tuesday, 13th October, the opening ceremony for the Scientific Conference which attracted dignitaries from all over Nigeria was done. The conference continued with the plenary session being the presentation on the main theme of the conference: COMBATING ACUTE AND CHRONIC HEALTH CHALLENGES: THE MEDICAL LABORATORY A CRITICAL TOOL; followed by other lectures and presentations.
Thursday was the Dinner/Awards night which proved to the organizers of the conference that the hall they booked for the conference was rather too small for it. Though many attendees of the conference had already returned to their base before that dinner party, the about one thousand capacity hall for the conference could not accommodate all the guests at the dinner party. Hence, the organizers booked up additional two separate halls downstairs at The Artrium for the dinner party, which were all filled to the brim. The events at the dinner party were however linked up with large TV screens.   The M.C. of the scientific conference, M.C. Barry (a Medical Lab. Scientist too) was at his best at the dinner party and got guests gasping for breathes with his rib-cracking jokes. One remarkable event at the dinner party was the group dance by the different ethnic groups of Nigeria as the M.C. called them up to dance turn by turn. Most notably was the fact that the living legend of MLS profession in Nigeria, Pa Tabansi, who attended the Scientific Conference hale and hearty, took part in the dancing and almost ‘out-danced’ everybody.
Friday was the AGM proper which was presided over by the national president, Alh. T.Y. Raheem. A myriad of issues were discussed. During the interactive session with the council registrar, Prof. Emeribe that followed later in the day, a myriad of issues were also discussed. Among other things, the registrar informed that:
1.From year 2016, MLScts who do not obtain the minimum 10 CPD units for renewal of practicing license will no longer be fined N5000 only; but that they will not be licensed at all.
2. He revealed that the take off fund of N250,000,000 for building our councils permanent secretariat in Abuja which is acclaimed as the best professional secretariat in Nigeria was released by the former minister of health Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu.
3.He charged scientists who teach students on clinical posting at the bench to take their job seriously because according to him: “The scientist in the lab is as important as the lecturer in the university.”

Saturday was the departure day and all the attendees safely returned to their respective bases armed with valuable information, inspiration, connections and possibilities from the 2015 AGM of Rivers of Possibilities.
