THE AGM AND THE ELECTION
By Izu Udemezue
The AMLSN’s 2014 Annual General Meeting (AGM)/Scientific Conference cum Golden Jubilee Celebration has come and gone. The AGM which held between Monday, 3rd November and Friday, 7th November, 2014 at Jojein Hotels and Resort Centre, in Akure, Ondo State(visit http://www.jojeinhotelsandresort.com) was well attended by over 1,300 Medical Laboratory Scientists from within Nigerian borders and beyond.
Present at the AGM were many of the elders of the profession including Professor Dennis Agbonlahor (a former V.C. of Ambrose Ali, University, Ekpoma, Edo State and Former National President of AMLSN), Elder Chief Dunstan Ikem Tabansi (the oldest MLS alive), Mr. Manassen; to mention but a few.
After the Scientific Conference, the Annual General Meeting proper took place on Friday, 7th November, 2014. It was presided over by the immediate past AMLSN national president, Dr. G.C. Okara who gave a good account of the stewardship of him and his executive team during his administration, for which they got a lot of applause. In his engaging and insightful speech, he said among other things:
"If Lab. Scientists tell you that you are a fool, they will tell you why you are a fool and they will give you the evidence that you are a fool."
"We should not resort to use of micro-tome knife or acids in the lab. to resolve issues with our detractors, rather, we should make use of the courts."
"If Lab. Scientists tell you that you are a fool, they will tell you why you are a fool and they will give you the evidence that you are a fool."
"We should not resort to use of micro-tome knife or acids in the lab. to resolve issues with our detractors, rather, we should make use of the courts."
After giving the account of their stewardship and stating what remains to be done, the Dr. G.C. Okara led executive body was officially dissolved in the AGM.
That Friday night was the night for manifesto presentations by candidates vying for the temporary vacant executive positions. All the candidates were at their best and delivered their manifesto from their hearts stating what they would do for the profession and association they have come to love so much, if elected. The night was also used for fund raising in support of one of us who was seeking re-election as House Of Representatives (HOR) member of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
All the events culminated in the Golden Jubilee Celebration of AMLSN Nigeria, on Saturday, 8 November, 2014. The Golden Jubilee Celebration was notably attended by former (interim) Head of State of Nigeria, Chief Ernest Shonekan (GCFR) who represented both himself and former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo (GCFR) at the event.
The event witnessed the presentation and launching of a new book which represents the history of MLS in Nigeria, titled: “Evolution of Medical Laboratory Science Profession in Nigeria.” The book was notably edited by Professor Agbonlahor.
Saturday night marked the election proper in which all duly registered Medical Laboratory Scientists who attended the conference cast their votes for their choice candidates. A keenly contested election in which margins of victory were mostly narrow, the election was adjudged to have been reasonably free and fair. The following individuals were elected for the various executive offices in the result that was announced late into Saturday night:
·President: Alhaji Toyosi Raheem
·Secretary: Mr. Suraj Junaid
·Secretary: Mr. Suraj Junaid
·1st Vice President: Mr. Uche Odionyenma

·Treasurer: Mr. Kayode Salako
·Financial Secretary: Dr. Felix Emelike
·Mr. Adeyeye A.Tam- National P.R.O.

One testimony we took away from the conference was that all who attended came safely and went home safely. To God Be All The Glory!
